Alumni News

Michi Wiancko (violinist) has teamed with her brother Paul (cellist) and
just completed their first duo concert tour to Japan in May-June 2010.
Now in the end of June 2010 Michi is performing in the Rome Chamber Music Festival with Robert McDuffie.
Her first message says: "having a great time. Staying in a nice hotel—concerts are at 9 pm every night,
with a dinner/reception each night at 11 pm! Very fancy and formal. Tonight was my first performance,
playing Brahms B Minor piano trio. On Thursday night I play the Ravel piano trio
and Schumann piano quintet. Here's a picture of the beautiful hall I'll be playing in."

Michi Wiancko shown above (violinist, San Clemente HS '95,
Cleveland Insitute of Music '99, Juilliard Master of Arts '01)
just received some rave notices on her tour in the United Kingdom.
Her new CD "9 Death Haiku" is terrific.... very sensual and creative.
Be sure to visit her website at http://www.michiwiancko.com

Who are the others in the photo above?
(L to R) Michi Wiancko, YoYo Ma, Paul Wiancko and Hiroko Wiancko.
All three of the Wianckos studied chamber music with me in the 1990s.
In August 2009 Michi performed Schumann Piano Quintet for the Mark Morris Dance Group
at the Mostly Mozart at Lincoln Center. Michi shared the stage (actually the orchestra pit with spot lights)
with Yo Yo Ma, Emmanuel Ax, Colin Jacobsen, and Jessica Troy

Jonathan Sun (violinist, Sunny Hills HS '06) is a pre-med major at UC-San Diego,
very busy preparing for medical school with a double major in psychology and biology.
He returns in July 2010 to lead the Brahms Viola Quintet performance July 18 in Cerritos.

Chris Wybenga (cellist, Valley Christian High School) started graduate school
in the fall 2009 semester at the University of San Francisco in non-profit management.

David Lee (violinist, Sunny Hills HS '98) was one of our FIRST students in CMI in 1997.
He now teaches English in South Korea and is still playing. He recently stopped in for a visit in Sept. 2009.

Alida Schat (violin, former student of Kay Pech in New Jersey in the 1970s)
is the concertmaster of the Dutch Metropole Orchestra and the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra,
and first violinist of the Amsterdam String Quartet.
She appears on numerous recordings under the baton of Ton Koopman and others.
She's the blonde in front on this album cover:

Charlie Sharzer (violist, Los Alamitos HS '08) returns to Yale for his sophomore year
and continues his composition studies. He performed for the Richard O'Neill Master Class
at the "Violapalooza" events at Metzler's Violin Shop in Glendale, CA, in March 2010.

Olivia Cottrell (violinist, Riversprings Charter School '08) is a sophomore
at Biola university majoring in Violin performance with a minor in Biblical studies.
She is thoroughly enjoying her classes, especially sight-singing and dictation.
She loves playing in the Biola Symphony, performing music from complete
operas by Mozart to The Polar Express, and debuting new pieces for
composition majors. Studying chamber music for three weeks at Credo,
held on the campus of Oberlin Conservatory was the highlight of her summer.

Marina Sharifi (violinist, homeschooled '02) has completed her
Masters' Degree at UC-Berkley and is now a graduate student
at the University of Chicago, pursuing a double degree
in Medicine as well as a simultaneous PhD in Biology Research.
